Your unwanted goods help others

KIND-hearted Vale residents are being urged to help needy people in the area by donating their unwanted household goods. Volunteers at Roundabout, a charity based in Blackminster Business Park want to make sure there is not a shortage of furniture and other items and so they are renewing their appeal to the public. The charity, which is managed by Bob Pooler, supports people in need of a helping hand such as those on low incomes or people who have experienced unavoidable problems in the home such as fire or flood damage. Through carrying out their charitable work, the organisation helps divert tonnes of costly waste away from landfill each year, saving taxpayer’s money. It is one of a number of organisations across the county, supported by the County Council. County Councillor Anthony Blagg, cabinet member for environment and waste management, said: “It is fantastic to continue to work with Roundabout, helping local residents to reuse their unwanted furniture by passing it on to people who really need it. “Often people are updating their home and have items that are in perfectly good condition but that they no longer want or need. Roundabout helps to keep such items out of landfill and ensures that local people who could benefit them can get hold of them.” Roundabout collects good quality household furniture as well as other domestic items such as crockery, curtains and ornaments. Furniture can be collected or dropped off by appointment, but must be free from stains and damage and comply with the fire regulations. Members of the public can visit the warehouse, based at Blackminster Business Park, to purchase furniture and other items, including books and ornaments. The income from these sales helps the charity to finance its operating costs. Call 01386 833030 to arrange collections or to drop off items visit www.letswasteless.com for more information and other ideas on how to waste less.

Charity joins forces with council to reduce waste.

A VALE charity has joined forces with Worcestershire County Council and Severn Waste Services in an attempt to further reduce waste. The partnership between these organisations and Roundabout, which is based on Blackminster Business Park and collects and redistributes furniture and household goods to people in need, aims to cut the amount of goods being taken to landfill. Staff at Hill and Moor tip in Throckmorton intercept furniture that is too good to become landfill and store it for collection by Roundabout’s volunteers. This partnership also allows residents to donate furniture and domestic items at Hill and Moor. Roundabout’s manager Bob Pooler said: “Over the past 16 years Roundabout has removed thousands of tonnes of reusable furniture from the waste system and this partnership with the county council and Severn Waste Services will help us increase this figure.” Coun Anthony Blagg, the county’s cabinet member for waste and sustainability, said: “I’d like to thank everyone involved with this venture, especially the volunteers at Roundabout. It’s a good example of how working together can achieve some brilliant results when it comes to driving down the amounts we send to landfill by reusing items.” Ian Barber, Severn Wastes marketing director, said: “This is a great example of reuse which takes valuable items out of the waste stream altogether, giving them a new life and helping people in need in the community.”

A TALENTED cartoonist from Hampton has hand-drawn a dozen humorous sketches for a Vale charity’s 2011 calendar, which is being given as a thank you gift to volunteers and support agencies. Gillian Anderton has also created a funny Christmas card for Blackminster Business Park based charity Roundabout, which collects and redistributes furniture and household goods to people in need. The 66-year-old artist started cartooning as a hobby some years go and her designs have become ever more popular, leading Roundabout’s manager Bob Pooler to hear about her unusual skill. “I loved doing the cartoons for Bob at Roundabout and he has already asked me to start thinking about new cartoons for his 2012 calendar,” Gillian said. “I was always top at art and bottom at maths at school and art has always been a passion of mine so it was a pleasure to do this for Roundabout.” Bob Pooler said he was thrilled with the personalised calendars, which will be given to his hard-working volunteers as well as people at the support agencies who refer local families in need of help, such as the John Martin Charity, Wychavon District Council and Worcestershire Council. “We are very grateful to Gillian, the cartoons are excellent. I hope everyone enjoys her sketches as much as we have,” Bob added. Gillian, who also paints portraits, is a volunteer at the Red Cross Centre in Briar Close where she runs an art class for people who are partially sighted.
